Learning How To Learn

My 8 years of teaching expose me to many students who are very smart but very weak in memorising content or solving mental sums. Thus, I believe this cognitive approach benefits students by improving their comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Step 1: SET GOALS. MANAGE TIME.

A student takes 5-8 subjects a year on average. A school day usually lasts 6-8 hours. Imagine all the information constantly bombarding them throughout the day.

The most effective way to study for a subject's content is to set a goal to reach at the end of the day. Ensure that the goal is realistic as well. For example, I may aim to complete a chapter of Maths in 3 hours today. I will focus all my energy and give my best for the 3 hours.

Step 2: COGNITIVE TRAINING

How do you memorise maths formula? How do you memorise key points for content heavy subjects? You train. Read through the formula or key points. Find a paper, scribble them down. Repeat the key points constantly through questioning yourself.

For example, you are learning about 5 factors why UK's healthcare system fails. After reading through and scribbling down the factors and key points, close your book and ask yourself, "what are the 5 factors?" List out the 5 factors yourself without referring to the book. Repeat if you didn't manage to recall the 5 factors.

STEP 3: SCHOOLWORK APPLICATION

The very important process is to apply formula to your schoolwork without referring to your notes or textbooks. Forcing yourself to memorise and apply the formula ensures those content are thoroughly understood and kept in your sub conscious memory. Continuous practicing helps to further entrench those information into your memory.

STEP 4: SCORE FOR EXAM

If you follow the above steps, the final tip for sitting for exams is to ensure you stay consistent through the months with the above method. You will ace your exams easily.
